Roman Mars returns for our annual dose of eponyms - words that derive from people's names.

This year: explosive revelations about the origins of the word 'guy'. How come the Gunpowder Plotter Guy Fawkes's first name ended up becoming another term for dude/bloke/chap? Historian Dr Victoria Buckley guides us through the turmoil of Tudor and Jacobean history.

CONTENT NOTE: the episode contains a description of torture and execution.

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS:

  • Listen to the previous eponymisodes about disease names and ballpoint pens for a fuller picture of Roman Mars's eponym adoration. And come along to our eponym-themed live show 99% Allusional if we're ever playing in your town!

  • An interesting dissection of 'guy'. Remember: if you have strong opinions about its use, here is your mission.

  • We were trying to cram a lot of very complicated history into a short amount of time in this episode. Read more about the circumstances surrounding the Gunpowder Plot.

  • Guy Fawkes's confession.

  • Ten things about Bonfire Night you probably didn't know.

  • The town of Lewes really goes for it on Bonfire Night. Prepare yourself for your visit, and take a look at some of Lewes's topical guys from the past few years.

  • The artist who designed those Guy Fawkes masks from V for Vendetta, and how they are manufactured.

  • Alan Moore was really not keen on the film adaptation of his graphic novel V for Vendetta.

  • Fill in your Jersey Shore vocabulary.
